Wayanad is a small district in the state of Kerala, India. It is situated 700 m above sea level and surrounded by thick green forests. We visited wayanad recently for 4 days and totally enjoyed our stay.
We took a flight from Chennai to Calicut and from Calicut we took a cab to wayanad. It takes for 3.5 hours to reach wayanad from the calicut airport. The roads are pretty good with lovely views all along the way.
We stayed in a resort called Green Park which is away from the main town of wayanad. This resort is a beautiful place surround by thick green trees. It gives you a feel of living right in the middle of the forest. With a wonderful host and lovely home cooked food, our stay was perfect! The only downside about the green park resort is that, the last km leading to the resort, the roads are very very bad. Hopefully the it will be mended soon.
Pros of Green Park Resort
Sight seeing
There are many places to see in wayanad. The list below is found in the Green Park facebook page. The distance mentioned in from the Green Park resort.
We did not visit many places as each place requires you to walk many kilometeres and we could not do that with small children. Also many of the falls and mountains were closed. We chose to visit places that were close the the resort and that which did not require walking for long distance or climbing up!
Also each place is situated at a distance from each other. So you need to travel atleast 20 kms from one place to another.
Karapuzha Dam and Rose Garden
This dam is close to the resort and a lovely place to visit with a play area for the children.
Soochippara Falls
When we visited this falls, the water level was very less and you need to walk about a km to reach the falls. The walk includes climbing up and down the mountains so it might be difficult for young children and the elderly.
Public Aquarium
The aquarium is also very close to the resort with lots of fish tanks with a variety of fishes to see.
Pookode Lake
This is the only place in wayanad that does not require walking. The lake is beautiful and they offer many different boat rides. There is also a playground inside and an aquarium and a funny mirrors room that the kids enjoy.
E3 Theme Park
This is another place that we visited. This is about 30 kms from the centre of wayanad district. We went as we wanted the children to enjoy. The theme park is an okay place to visit. There is boating, an aviary, aquarium, pet zoo, dino park, tribal world, zip line with lots of shows in between.
Edakkal Caves and Chembara Peak and Banasura Dam are quite famous in Wayanad. But we did not visit as you need to walk and climb lots of steep stairs in edakkal caves and walk about 4 kms to chembara peak and Banasura Dam was far and we did not think our small kids will be able to manage. We chose to visit places closes by and enjoyed our time together as a family.
The climate
The climate is Wayanad is very pleasant and cool in the evenings and mornings with the afternoons being mildy hot. We visited in the month of April.
My take - Wayanad is a beautiful quiet place to visit for the holidays with the family!

- Situated in the middle of thick greenery (almost like the middle of the forest)
- Quiet and peaceful
- Wonderful, accommodative and helpful host
- Piping hot home cooked food
- Have to travel quite far
- Roads leading to the resort is bad
- Room is sufficient for a couple or a small family (although extra bedding is given)
- No wifi, no TV connection, AC was not working when we visited
