VGP Snow Kingdom is situated in East Coat Road, Chennai and it is one of the leading places of attraction for the young and the old. When we went there, we saw children as small as 2 years old and elderly people, as old as 70 years old. Everybody seems to enjoy the place especially since it's not possible for us living in Chennai to experience snow. Lots of school children too visit the place for excursions.
Snow Kingdom is situated next to VGP Golden Beach and there is a Wax Museum, Click Art Museum and Camera Museum inside the premises. Tickets are available as a package to visit all the places inside or you can buy tickets only to snow kingdom. We went only to snow kingdom as we were on our way to Cornerstone House.
After we got the tickets, we were asked to leave our bags and footwear in the booth and a token was given to us. We chose to keep the bags in the car and only left our footwear in the booth. A big bag is given to each family to put our foot wear and handbags inside and they collect these big bags and give us tokens.
Sessions start off at 10:15 am and each session lasts for 45 mins. They provide socks, boots, gloves, jackets with hoods. They have sizes for kids and adults. Although it's not a perfect match, it fits us sufficiently to withstand the cold. The staff is friendly and helpful.
After we booted up, we were waiting for our session to start. There is no AC outside and we were sweating in our jackets and boots until we were allowed inside. About 10 minutes before the session starts (at 11 am), we were asked to form a queue and we went inside to a waiting area leading to the snow. At exactly 11:15 am we were allowed inside the snow arena and we were welcomed with a blast of icy cold air!!
The whole place is beautifully set up with slides for kids and adults and other play things for kids. There is a trampoline, a sledge, snow mans, polar bear and reindeer figures, rock climbing and other fun activities. Walking in the snow is a little difficult as we are not used to it. My kids enjoyed playing in the slide, where they slide down in a huge tire. My husband also enjoyed the adults slide.
There is a small tea shop inside where you can enjoy hot tea! There is also a dance floor which they start after about 30 minutes after you enter. Few minutes after we enter, they start a machine which spews out 'snow' from the top giving a real snowing effect but also ends up making the place much colder.
If you find the place too cold, then you can go out the exit where there is a small waiting area. You can warm yourself again and come back into the snow. We were allowed to be in the snow area for 45 minutes hour after which we were ushered out.
Once we come out, we removed out boots and jackets and left it in their respective bins. Not being used to such extreme temperature, we were reeling from the cold with frozen feet, hands and nose!! We ran out into the sun to warm us up! (I guess that's why the outside does not have AC) My kids who are 6 and 4 years old could not bear the cold temperature for too long. We were inside for 20 minutes before my youngest started cramping due to cold so I brought him out to warm him up a bit and then went in again but still we could not stay in for too long as it's extremely cold.
My take
Snow Kingdom is a beautiful and wonderful place that everybody must visit especially those who don't have an opportunity to ever see snow. But do take caution if you are taking small children or senior citizens as it's extremely cold. Be prepared to see them run out after a few minutes.
Also the boots they give are not dried properly so when we wore it, it had residual water in it (from the previous user) and it became more cold once we entered the snow arena. The socks are perfectly dry.
Also make sure you pick the right size boots for your kids. My son was given a small size boots which he found extremely difficult to walk inside the snow which made him cramp up pretty soon.
